Red Country, 2025

A commentary piece about the South, inspired heavily by William Christenberry.

When I discovered William Christenberry, I immediately felt very connected to his work. When I found William Christenberry, I knew I could explore my own criticism of the South. So, I did a political take on Christenberry’s work. Most of the South is poor, underdeveloped, and almost forgotten by the rest of the country. There is an enormous lack of access to quality education and healthcare, partly due to the awful distribution of funding at the state level. I traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Ellijay, Georgia, and drove along I-20 from Alabama to Georgia for this project. I decided to increase the vibrancy of the colors in all the images to both highlight the “essence of the South,” as Christenberry said.
